Historical Context
The death penalty started during the eighteen century B.C under the code of Hammurabi of Babylon( this is a table of 282 laws which scaled punishments depending on social status, of slave versus free man) and 25 different types of crime led to the death penalty except for murder (http://www.ushistory.org/civ/4c.asp). In the fourteen century B.C the death penalty was part of the Hittite Code, in seventeen century B.C it was part of the Draconian code of Athens is was the punishment of all crimes, and in the fifth century B.C the death penalty was part of the roman law 12 tables. Some methods of the death punishment during those time periods were crucifixion, drowing, beating, burning alive, impalement, hanging publically, and sometimes being crushed to death by elephants.
From the years 1823 to 1832 the death penalty was eliminated for over 100 of the 222 crimes punishable by death. The death penalty was brought over to the United States by Britain before the United States had created the Declaration of Independence.
Now in the present day there are questions and concerns that make people rethink the death penalty and whether it should be used or not. One argument against the death penalty is that it is unconstitutional and wrong towards the people that are victims of it. So the question that goes around many countries and governments is, is the death penalty an acceptable form of punishment to the people of socities?
