Religion connection
Through history the death punishment has been use in many religions as a sacrifice to gods or as a punishment for those who acted wrong. Christianity and Catholics now days disagree with the death penalty but it has it was not like that before. It is said that the Old Testament teaches the death penalty, and that god created the death penalty as a method to rein form human kind. In total, the Old Testament specifies 36 capital offences including crimes such as idolatry, magic and blasphemy, as well as murder (http://www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/christianity/christianethics/capitalpunishment 1.shtml).In the New Testament it says in Matthew 15:4 Jesus says "He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die" this refers to sins commits, that those who do not respect their parents should die because they are committing a sin.
Another part of Christianity/Catholic history take us back to the death punishment indirectly is the Noah ark, in this God try to punish human kind by killing everyone except those who were in the ark. In Iraq, the Islam religion is rigorous with their people, making them follow their unconditionally laws with no questions. In early history people could not curs the prophet because they would be given the death penalty. People do not have freedom of speech to say or do anything regarding their religion because they will get punish. Another important factor of the Iraq religion is that people cannot change their religion; once they are born in Islam or they are converted to Islam they cannot abandon this religion otherwise it is considered a crime punishable by death (http://www.fidh.org/IMG/ pdf/Rapport_Iran_final.pdf).
